There has been limited interest in differentiating between mentions of English terms and mentions of Latin (Roman) script terms of other languages. The community appears to prefer the simpler syntax of a single mention template ({{term}}). If the community does decide to so differentiate, this template will be used to mention an English term or phrase within running text. Otherwise, use {{term}} instead.

This template shows the English term or phrase (optionally linked) in the appropriate font and with the appropriate adornments, along with its gloss, if any.

If the mentioned term or phrase should link to a Wiktionary entry, use positional parameter {{{1}}}:

From {{en-term|word}} + ...

From “‘word’” + ...

If the mentioned term or phrase should should also show alternate text, use positional parameter {{{2}}}:

From {{en-term|inflect|inflected}} + ...

From “‘inflected’” + ...

If the mentioned term or phrase should be followed by a gloss to denote a specific sense, use positional parameter {{{3}}}:

From {{en-term|gloss|glossing|becoming shiny}} + ...

From “‘glossing’” (“‘becoming shiny’”) + ...

Note that {{{2}}} can be omitted, even when showing the gloss:

If the mentioned term or phrase should not be linked to a Wiktionary entry, omit positional parameter {{{1}}}:

By default, English terms and phrases mentioned through this template appear in bold (pending a formal vote). Readers can easily toggle the output from bold to italics, double quotes, or single quotes by selecting “Show other English mentions in italics”, “Show other English mentions in double quotes”, or “Show other English mentions in single quotes” from WT:PREFS. For more permanent or more advanced customization, readers can add styles to their style sheets, as described at WT:CUSTOM:

For plain format (From word + ...):

For bold format (From word + ...):

For italicized format (From word + ...):

Further, the default style of the subsequent English translation glosses is in double quotes (pending a vote to approve this template). Readers can easily change the output to single quotes by selecting “Show English glosses for mentioned terms in single quotes” from WT:PREFS. Alternatively, readers can add styles to their style sheets, as described in WT:CUSTOM:
